Game day
celticdragonfly, selenite, and I are hosting a game day, a week from this coming Saturday.

March 21, 2009, starting at about 11am, and ending when the last person either decides to head home, or we all fall over asleep, depending on how things go. We are planning on providing lunch and dinner. If you have special dietary restrictions, please let us know ahead of time, or make arrangements. Also, as we are using my birthday as an excuse, there will likely be some sort of dessert(s?) made available, and I will likely be subjected to singing. Please don't feel obligated to bring gifts. Having friends over and playing games is quite a treat in and of itself.

We have a *lot* of board and card games, but if you have something specific in mind, feel free to bring it along, or ask if there is a copy already at the house. There is plenty of table space, and we can even set up a second table if there are enough people for multiple concurrent games. (Setting up a third table would be a little tricky, but we are clever folk, and would almost certainly find a way.)

If you plan on coming over for some gaming, or have questions, please leave a comment. We aren't going to be strict about RSVP'ing, but it does simplify the logistics to have a rough headcount beforehand.

Today's bit of fun
Today, I was playing around with my phone, and seeing how Google Maps interacted with the GPS for my phone, and how that would all work with a mad-science style setup I have in the car, created in an effort to totally geek out. The intent is to be able to have the phone playing music streamed off of my computer, over the radio, while the GPS setup kindly guides me to new and unusual places, while still being able to be used as a phone should somebody decide to call me while my phone is in full Identity Crisis Mode.

Things I learned tonight:

1) The whining that I was hearing on the radio while trying this wasn't because of the proximity of the power converter to the FM transmitter. It was the fact that the power into the phone is going through the same plug as the audio out, and it is interfering there. That may take some work to figure out a way around. I have some ideas, but am going to be doing some research.

2) The GPS receiver seems to work just as well, whether it was sitting on the dashboard, sitting in the shade under where my gauges are, or in the console between the front seats. 9 satellites spotted either way. (Oddly jumping to 10 for a moment when I put it in the console)

3) Google Maps + GPS is useful, but there are certain things it won't do. For instance, it won't re-calculate the route if I go off of it, it won't step through the route as I drive it (it just follows where I am, and leaves the route visible, rather than letting me know that *that* was the exit I was supposed to take), and it totally failed to warn me of the small family of skunks I nearly ran over.

Oh yeah. The skunks.

On my way home, I stopped at a gas station that was right at Beach St. and Fossil Vista Dr. Seeing that Beach St. was a bit crowded heading back to the highway, I decided to take Fossil Vista Dr. to get around the traffic, and I didn't have the map zoomed out far enough to realize that to the east right there was a semi-self-contained neighborhood. Took Fossil Vista east, Fossil Creek Blvd. north, realized I was heading back to Beach St., turned around on Fossil Ridge Circle (realizing it would take me back to Fossil Creek Blvd.), watched that turn into Fossil Creek Circle then headed south on Fossil Creek Blvd. to the access road. (Could somebody buy these guys a new word? I think that they have overused "Fossil") The skunks were on Fossil Creek Circle, just before I got back to Fossil Creek Blvd.

I got away unscathed, but I am fairly certain that the mother was probably left admonishing the children. Whether for crossing the road without looking both ways, or for not being quick enough on the draw to make me regret failing to yield, I don't know. And I didn't feel like stopping to ask.

So that was my adventure for the evening. Whee.

There is a line around here somewhere...

I know there is.

It's supposed to sit between cleverness and stupidity, and keep the two of them apart.

Unfortunately, when I got a look at this, I went looking for that line, and couldn't figure out which side this fell on. It's either a wonderful example of government stupidity, marketing exhibiting an odd disconnect from reality, or one of the most amusingly simple IQ tests I have seen in some time...

What do you think?Collapse )

Mightily mixed-up musical memery
I got this meme off of celticdragonfly, got got it elsewhere, who likely got it elsewhere, as these things tend to go.

In any case, here are the rules.

Step 1: Put your media player on random
Step 2: Post the first line(s) of the first 25 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song.
Step 3: Post and let everyone guess what song and artist the lines come from.

How many of these can you guess?Collapse )

Memery goodness
Well, since a friend of mine answered my comment on her journal, I am compelled to continue the meme.

LEAVE ME A COMMENT AND....
1. I'll respond with something random I like about you.
2. I'll tell you what song/movie reminds me of you.
3. I'll name something we should do together.
4. I'll say something that only makes sense to you and me (or just me).
5. I'll tell you my first/clearest memory of you.
6. I'll leave you a quote that is somehow appropriate to you.
7. I'll ask you something that I've always wondered about you.
8. If I do this for you, you must post this on your journal so you can do the same for other people.
